先週土曜、２年に１回開催されるフィンランド国内最大のアウトドアーイベント、エラメッスへ行ってきました。

２年前にも行って来たのですが、今回はさらにすごい人ごみ。目的のブースを見つけるのもひとくろうでした。しかし、ブッシュクラフト仲間と会ったり、今まで欲しかったものを格安で手に入れたり。何しろ多くの物欲ギアが同じ場所に勢ぞろいですので、メーカーと話をしながら今後手に入れたいギアを比較検討する良い機会でした。

I was at Riihimäki Erämessut 2012 on last weekend. It is once in every 2nd year event and is a largest outdoor event in Finland.

There ware so many people that I felt like was there for looking at people and was job to locate the booth I was interested in.

however, it is very good chance to see all what you wish to have in one location. you can see touch, try, talk to maker to see what might be best.

well it is just easier to see than read, so here are some pictures

このティーピーはなかなか良かったです。小型ながらも、前室があるのですごく広く感じます。ＨｅｌＳｐｏｒｔ製

この折りたたみ式カヤックは良かった。スポーツバックサイズに収納できる。残念ながらカヌーバージョンは展示無し・・・

お気に入りブランドになりつつあるフィンランドのＳＡＶＯＴＴＡ。時間たっぷりと取ったので写真も多目。
I spend quite enough time in here  so showing more pictures. it is becoming one of my favorite brand these days.

フィンランドの伝統的シェルター「ロウエ」。手ごろな値段なんだけど、理由あって今回は見送りです。
Loue shelter. not expensive, but I cannot justify the purchase of this item at this moment... 

ペナラーブと言うチョッと面白いシェルター。Ａフレームとの違いは支柱。テントの真ん中に一本Ｔ字型の物が入ります。張り縄が必要ないので設営簡単。
PenaLaavu. it is very interesting design. there is only one T shaped pole on center. no need for rope to tension it.

ＳａｖｏｔｔａのＵＬギアシリーズ。ＵＬライン作ってるの知りませんでした。写真はシュラフ。４５ユーロ。。。安すぎない？
I did not realize that Savotta also makes UL equipments. the picture is a sleeping bag. packed size is about 30cm on long side.

こちらもまったく未チェックだったラインアップ。タクティカル系ギアです。まーフィンランド軍に製品納めてる会社なので、フツーのながれかな～と。

ＳＡＶＯＴＴＡのヴィンテージパックの幾つかが展示されてました。残念ながら私の所有するモデルはなかったです。Some old SAVOTTA back packs was on display. My vintage pack was not among them....

次回は２年後。Next time is 2 years after.

裏山ブッシュクラフト - #06 ツリガネ茸 (#06 Tinder Fungus)

始めにちっと宣伝。遅ればせながらツイッター始めました。右上にフォローボタン置きましたので、よろしくお願いします。

では本題。
前回は、メタルマッチで着火することが出来る天然の火口（ティンダー）をいくつか紹介しました。メタルマッチはとても高熱の火花を飛ばしますので、脱脂綿などを持参しなくても火口は簡単に見つけることが出来ます。　しかし、昔ながらの火打石を使うとなると話は変わります。火打石で飛ばす火花は温度も低く、微量の火花しか飛びません。これで着火することの出来る火口は非常に限られ、特に自然界で入手しようとする場合、知らなければまず入手不可です。そこで今回は火打石に使える天然の火口の採集と加工方法を紹介です。
あ。。。ちなみにフライフィッシングに使うアマドゥシートも作り方同じです。フライフィッシャーの方はぜひ挑戦してみてください！

紹介したい情報量の関係でビデオをＰａｒｔ１、Ｐａｒｔ２に分けました。今回はＰａｒｔ１をお送りします。

Last time was to find tinder for Firesteel. The Firesteel makes very high heat sparks, so it is quite easy to find somthing which could be used as a tinder. But with traditinal Flint & Steel, it makes very weak sparks, so you will need somthing special.
Amadou made from tinder fungus is the most common natural tinder. Takes bit of effort to process it, but for sure important skill if you wish to carry the Flint & Steel.

Because of all the process and information I wanted to include, I have split the video in 2 parts. This is part 1 of 2.

Interesting outdoor project coming up from Google

At its "Next Dimension" Google Maps event, Google has introduced a backpack street view cam kit.

It is called "Street View Trekker" and weigh 18kg. With this kit, the Google street view is now able to go off-load.

Well, most likely the project will start from major destinations like national parks and so on, but I think this is a great project, so can check out the destination in advance...

or 

Will this take away the joy and excitement of first time look at the new destination from us?

However it is very interesting project and if Google would need trekkers, I would like to sign up.

夏休み２泊キャンプ ２日目 – Summer trip report Day2

ハッキリ言って１晩めは殆ど寝れませんでした。と言うのも私たち以外に１カップル同じ屋根の下で寝ていたのですが、このカップルが一晩中ア～んなことをしてごそごそごそごそ。それにひっきりに無しにストーブに薪をくべるから、小屋の中はサウナ状態の暑さ。それでも何とか寝て、朝は早々と起きだし焚き火で朝食。
朝食後は友人をみおくり、ソロキャンプの開始です。

Really... I could not have good sleep on night 1. There was other people slept under same roof that night, and they were a couple… and they have been active all night…. And I mean “ACTIVE”. Also they have kept throwing large amount of firewood in the stove, so the kota was like sauna inside. So got up very early in the morning and started the breakfast fire.
After the breakfast, my friend head back home and I started my solo camp.

２日目の行動内容は、２キロほど先にある小さめの湖までハイキング。そこで昼食、リラックスしてキャンプへ戻る。地図を見るとハイキング向けの簡単なコースらしい。いらない荷物はリュックにまとめ、フィンランド軍のガスマスク用バッグから作ったスカウトパックに切り替え出発。が、５００メートルほど進んだところで道は険しくなり、１キロ地点付近で消滅？？？最後に確認できた道標まで戻り地図で確認、しかし先は見つからない。仕方が無いのでコンパスで直線コースを出し、藪こぎ開始。

The activity of the day was to have hike to small lake about 2 km away then have lunch and back to camp. Packed away all I do not need for the hike and took my new scout bag made from Finnish army gasmask bag. It was supposed to be easy walk… and it was on beginning 500m. Then the trail became rocky and covered with overhang trees. About 1km point, trail just vanished. I was correctly following the trail markings. I even track back for few meters to the last one I checked, but could not find the continuing trail. So, I pulled out map and compass, aimed straight line to destination, started the bushwhacking.

シャグマアミガサタケ＞非常に強い毒性を持つきのこ、正しく処理すると食用でき、とても美味。春の茸。

Gyromitra esculenta: highly poisons but after proper preparation,it is delicious to eat. Spring mushroom. 

藪を抜けると歩きやすい森に出た。もうすぐ目的の湖が見えてくるはず。
Through the bush, came out in easier walking forest. The lake should be close.

目的地に到着、記念写真を撮り昼食の準備。

Arrived at destination, took some group photo, set up lunch.

Finnish air force(<= inside joke…) bombarding the youngest one.  

燃えにくい松の樹皮で風除けを作ってみた。
Made wind shield with pine bark.

キャンプに戻り、シェルターを建て始める。自作ポンチョテント。通常は未テストの道具は持っていかないのだが、今回だけ異例。

タープを張るのとなんら変わらない簡単さで完成。マー場所選びにしっかりと時間使ったしね。

Back to camp, it is time to set up the shelter. Pulling out DIY poncho shelter and setting it up for very first time… I usually do not bring any gear which is not tested before hand, but this was a special case.

Setting up was as easy as setting tarp and took no time, thaw I spend good time look for best possible spot, so I can have good undisturbed sleep. 

リーントゥー型に片側を完全に開けて使っても良かったのだが、他のハイカーも結構多く通るので、プライバシー確保のため横のみを開けて使用。このシェルターとても使い心地良いです。中も広いし、適度に遮光されるから白夜に良いし。犬たちも自由に行き来できるから気に入ったようだ。

Could have used as lean to, but I wanted to have bit of privacy, so just kept the side open. I really like this shelter. Very roomy, feels good, and dogs seems to like this shelter that they can come and go freely.

あまりにも居心地良いので、新シェルターを満喫しているうちに寝入ってしまい、おきたときには夕飯の時間。んん・・・釣りしておかずを手に入れる予定だったのに・・・

と言うことで、夕飯は質素に白米と味噌汁、おかずには海苔となりました。

もちろん待ち時間は箸や杓文字を薪から削りだし。撮影用に簡易の皿も作ってみた。久しぶりに焚き火でご飯。焦げ無し、水加減良し、ご飯立ってる成功炊飯！

Well, in fact the new shelter was so comfy, while enjoying it, I fell asleep. When woke up, it was time for dinner… I was planning on going fishing to get side dish for dinner, but too hungry for that. So just made very simple Japanese bushcrafters’ meal. 

Of course, while waiting for the meal to cook, I have crafted chopsticks, rice spoon and eating plate. Oh, do not underestimate the complexity of making chopsticks. to make properly working one, it requires some skills :). 

Rice and Miso soup, the Japanese bushcrafters’ meal :) a fish would complete the set properly…

夕飯の後はゆっくりと色々なクラフトをして過ごす。その中でも感心したのが、熱処理をした木製矢尻。これだけの貫通力があればウサギくらいならいけそうです。

The lest of the evening was spend doing different types of crafts. The one really impressed me was the heat-treated wooden arrow tip. This penetration power, should be enough for small games??

２晩目は本当によく寝れました。日曜の夜でしたので他のハイカーや、キャンパーは無し。軟らかい森の床、自分だけのスペースでドップリと寝込んでしまいました。

翌朝は普通に早起きし、朝食を済ませて片付け開始。来た時よりもきれいにして帰るのが基本ですね！

The second night, I have slept so well. it was Sunday night so no other people staying. also this time was on the soft comfy forest floor, and in my own space.

Woke up early-ish time, have breakfast, pack up and cleanup the site. 

出だしはつまづき気味でしたが、最終的には楽しい時間が過ごせたキャンプで、何だか久しぶりにストレスがスカッと抜けたような気分で帰路につきました。Ｓａｖｏｔｔａのヴィンテージパックもしっかりと活躍し、チョッと手を加えればグレートなパックに育ってくれそうです。また次持ち出すのが楽しみ楽しみ！

was stressful starting, but the closing was great. felt like finally have got some own time, stress-less. The Savotta pack worked well and with little bit of modification, it will be a great pack for me. also, this pack, it makes me feel like going out with it each time I look at it....

夏休み２泊キャンプ １日目 – Summer trip report Day1

夏休み中２泊キャンプ行ってきました。１日目は友人（ハンガリー出身）と。クレイジーメキシカンも参加の予定だったのですが、前日に体調を崩し棄権。２日目は私一人でソロキャンプという日程です。
場所はいつもの場所ではなく、今まで利用したことない場所を選択・・・しかし問題発覚。予定していた場所、とてもくつろいでキャンプできるような状態では無かったのです。フィンランドのこういった施設では非常に珍しいことなのですが、荒れ放題に荒れてる。薪はあちらこちらに散乱し、寝床のリーントゥーは土足であらされ座ることすら躊躇するような状態。ルート沿いに立てられている道標も全て剥がされていた。住宅地から０．８ｋｍという近さのためだろうか？それにしてもひどい。

I have had 2 nights out trip during my holiday. First day was with friend and the second day was solo. The Mexican friend was supposed to join, but he got sick on day before so he skipped this time.
The location, we choose some new place where we never have been. On the map, it looks promising but, when we have reached the site, we realized that this site is not going to be present…
The indication was seen from the starting of the trail.  All the signs along the path were vandalized. And the campsite… it was impossible. I have lived and seen Finnish people and them behavior in the nature and have used the outdoor facilities in the forest quite a lot. But I never have seen such a mess and claw mark of vandalism. Fire wood pile was dissipated all over the site. Laavu was messed with muddy boots marks, fire pit was almost unusable condition and leftover char are piled around. The location was only 0.8km walk from living area, but this cannot be happening…

仕方が無いので地図を広げて場所変更を検討。ラッキーなことに４ｋｍ程さらに歩いた場所にキャンプ可能地がある。この時点で時間は１８時頃、しかし林道を近道として使えば３ｋｍチョッとの距離。これなら今からでも十分可能だ。

So we decided to change the site. Open the map and check what is possible to access from here… we have started the trip after 17:00, so do not have too much time to move around.
Luckily, there is another location about 4km walk away. It should be far enough, so no easy vandalism can reach. Also, there is a forest car road running, which we could use it as shortcut, making it about 3km distance.



目的地に到着したら即夕飯の準備、自分の分と犬の分。ゆっくりしたいが、そんな暇は無いのです。
As soon as arrived at destination, start preparing meal, for myself and for dogs… no time to relax, chill out yet.

食事が終わったところでやっとゆっくり出来ます。ブーツを脱いで冷たい湖に足を入れる、最高に気持ち良いです。
After the meal, finally the time to chill out. take off boots and dip in the feet to cold lake. Fantastic feeling.

焚き火の横でリラックスしているとオオハクチョウが風きり音を立てながら舞い降りてきました。ホボ目の前に降り立つその光景は感動物。白鳥の大きさといい、風きり音といい、ただただ見とれるばかりです。
While we are relaxing by the fire, there came a pair of swan right front of where we are.
that bard is really big and amazingly beautiful. especially when fly pass close range... the wing span, the look, the sound.

tried Rakovalkea super mini... well it did not work. somthing must be missing from this construction.
ラコヴァルケア、ミニミニヴァージョンに挑戦、、、何かが足りないらしく失敗。

１晩めはコタ（フィンランド式ティーピー）で寝る。ハッキリ言って寝心地悪い・・・
1st night, I have slept in here... honestly, I did not like it. could not sleep well...

Canoe trip with Mexican – クレイジーメキシカンとカヌートレッキング

On the last week of my summer holiday, I took out my canoe to nearby lake. One of the occasions was with my best friend.  We have been talking about going canoeing together since I got my canoe, but was long winter and did not have chance till now.

夏休みの最後の週、冬の間眠っていたカヌーを持ち出して、近場の湖でカヌートレッキングをしてきました。２回行って来たのですが、その２回目はあのクレイジーメキシカンといっしょ。カヌーを手に入れてからずっと、「冬が開けたら一緒にカヌー行こう！」と話をしていたので、やっとの実現です。

Started the paddling from usual place and went around the lake for a while. Enjoy the scenery and hen came close to the island, we have spotted a pair of Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus). We decided to get closer as possible, but carefully not too close, to observe the beauty.

いつも利用している場所から漕ぎ出しまずは湖を一周。そして焚き火の出来る島に近づいた時にオオハクチョウ（Cygnus cygnus）のペアを発見。静かに、そして慎重に近づき肉眼でバードウォッチング。カヌーだとまったく音を立てずに漕げるのでかなり近づけます。（近づき過ぎないように！）

After enjoying the nature on the water, we have landed on the island and time for satisfying the empty stomach. 

湖面からの自然を満喫した後は島で空腹を満たすための焚き火です。

火床がひっそりと待っていてくれました。

But before we can fill up our stomach, need to start the fire. So walked around to pick some kindling and fire woods. So I thought this would be a good time to give him a knife so he can make himself a makkaratikku (sausage grilling stick).

空腹を満たすにはまず焚き火を始める必要があります。まずはもう一仕事、薪と焚き付け集めです。そして、焚き火周りでの作業をするにはナイフが必要！良い機会ですのでここでナイフをプレゼントすることにしました。

Well, I guess he really was happy about getting the knife. He was whittling something all the time during the fire time and came up with quite good grilling stick system of holder + stick.

よっぽど嬉しかったらしく、焚き火をしている間はずっと何かを削ってました。もちろんソーセージ焼くための串も自作し、ついでに抑え棒まで・・・

　

Once we are done eating sausages, it was a coffee time. but the Mexican did not bring any cup, so I made him a tuohilippi, the traditional Finnish birch bark cup. But I must confess, this one on the picture did not work. I have used a dried bark and as soon as I pour coffee in, it started to rip itself. I guess I should have used a fresh one and bit thicker bark.

ソーセージを食べ終わった後はコーヒータイム。が、メキシカン君、コップを忘れる・・・そこでフィンランドの伝統的白樺樹皮のコップ、tuohilippiを作ってみた。

が、正直に白状すると、写真の物は大失敗。乾燥した薄い皮から作ったためコーヒーを注いだとたんにカールして裂けてしまった。やっぱり乾燥しきっていない厚めの樹皮を使う必要があるようだ。

Well, I made revenge on this tuohilippi making later and that was success.

そこでリベンジ！失敗を糧に作り直したものは成功！

After this, we got in to crafting something. Made atlatl, cordage from natural materials and practiced some rope works…

spend very relaxing and enjoyable time then paddled back on lake under the white night.

この後はクラフトの流れになり、アトラタルや紐の撚り方、色々なロープの縛り方などを練習して楽しい時間を過ごし終了。白夜の湖面をパドルして帰路に着きました。

裏山ブッシュクラフト - #05ナチュラル・ティンダー (#05 Natural Tinder)

今回の裏山ブッシュクラフトはナチュラル・ティンダー。メタルマッチを使って着火することのできる火口と言えば、コットンボール等人口的な物が一般的です。しかしメタルマッチの利点を最大限に活かすのは、やはり自然界にある物を火口に使えるようになる必要があると思います。そこで今回は、どんなものが火口になるのかを少し試して見ました。
